The Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem, has attended the funeral ceremony of late Elder Hon. J.A. Egbe Jabengo in Obubra Local Government Area, describing the deceased as a respected public servant whose life reflected dedication, longevity, and service to the state.
Speaking during the funeral rites, the Speaker said the gathering was not only to mourn but to celebrate a man whose life left enduring marks on the political history of Cross River State. According to him, the late Jabengo lived beyond ninety years and spent much of that time contributing to the growth of his community and the development of democratic institutions in the state.
Hon Ayambem noted that the late elder had once served in the Cross River State House of Assembly, holding positions that placed him among the respected veterans of the legislative institution. He added that the Assembly was particularly proud that the family of the late lawmaker still maintains a presence in the current legislature, with one of his sons Hon. Egbe Abeng, serving in the 10th Assembly.
Reflecting on the biblical measure of life, the Speaker observed that scripture speaks of three score and ten years, yet the late elder surpassed that age and lived a life worthy of celebration. “He lived well above ninety years, and today we gather not just to mourn but to celebrate a life well spent,” Ayambem said.
The Speaker also acknowledged the large and united family the late patriarch left behind, noting that he was survived by between twenty and thirty children, many of whom are doing well in their various fields.
Offering words of counsel to the family, Ayambem urged them to remain united and preserve the legacy of their father. “My message to the family is unity. Let them stay together in peace and harmony so they can continue the legacy their father built. Let the name Jabengo never die,” he advised.
