The Governor of Cross River State, Sen. Apostle Prince Bassey Edet Otu, has joined the people of Obanliku in celebrating the 2026 New Yam and Cultural Festival, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to the people, culture and development of the Local Government Area.
Governor Otu was warmly received by the Executive Chairman of Obanliku LGA, Hon. Amb. Chief Sunny Ayang, JP, amid cheers from traditional rulers, political leaders, youths, women, cultural groups and enthusiastic residents who gathered to celebrate the rich heritage of the people.
The Governor’s presence added further significance to the colourful festival, which provided an opportunity for the people of Obanliku to showcase their cultural identity, strengthen community bonds and celebrate their shared heritage.
Delivering the New Yam remarks on behalf of the people of Obanliku, the Commissioner for Science and Technology, Assoc. Prof. Justin Beshel, emphasised the importance of preserving the people’s cultural identity while pursuing unity, prosperity and sustainable development.
The celebration attracted an array of distinguished personalities, including the Deputy Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Hon. Sylvester Agabi; State Chairman of the APC, Rt. Hon. Chris Etta; Chief of Staff to the Governor, Hon. Chief Emmanuel Ironbar; Member Representing Obudu, Bekwarra and Obanliku Federal Constituency, Hon. Chief Peter Akpanke; Executive Chairman of Obudu LGA, Hon. Peter Undiandeye, Ph.D.; and Paramount Ruler of Obanliku LGA, HRM Amb. (Dr.) Amos Uyimulam Item, JP.
Members of the State Executive Council, APC State and Local Government executives, political appointees, traditional rulers, members of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, community stakeholders, youths, women and various support groups also participated in the celebration.
Governor Otu’s attendance and goodwill further highlighted the relationship between the state government and the people of Obanliku, as the community celebrated under the theme “Celebrating Our Heritage, Our Pride, Our Prosperity.”
The festival also underscored the growing importance of culture as a platform for community unity, intergenerational connection and the promotion of Obanliku’s identity and development aspirations.
