Hon. Sunny Ayang Hosts Grand Celebration for Governor Otu’s 66th Birthday in Obanliku As Fusion 196 Endorses Governor Otu for Second Term

The Executive Chairman of Obanliku Local Government Area, Hon. Chief (Dr.) Sunny Ayang, JP, in partnership with Fusion 196, a renowned political support group, hosted a grand celebration in honour of the 66th birthday anniversary of the Executive Governor of Cross River State, His Excellency, Apostle Senator (Prince) Bassey Edet Otu, at Sangji’s Hotels, Obanliku LGA.

Hon. Sunny Ayang in his remarks, congratulated Governor Otu on the milestone, commending his developmental strides and people-oriented policies. He thanked Fusion 196 for choosing Obanliku as the host local government, describing the gesture as a mark of honour and inclusion, and reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening grassroots development in Obanliku .

“This celebration is a call to action,” the Chairman said. “I appeal to His Excellency to extend development to Obanliku, especially in urbanization, infrastructure, road construction, General Hospital refurbishment, and school renovation. Your People First mandate keeps motivating us to do more for our people.”

The State Coordinator of Fusion 196, Mr. Joseph Agbor, praised Governor Otu’s transformational leadership and praised Hon. Ayang for his exceptional performance and commitment to good governance.

“Hon. Sunny Ayang has not failed the people of Obanliku. It’s no surprise he is fondly called ‘The Home Man for the Home Job.’ I urge the people of Obanliku to continue supporting him with prayers and encouragement so he can do even more,” Agbor stated.

The award, presented by Mr. Agbor, recognised Ntufam Ugbo’s steadfast support for the group and for Governor Otu’s developmental vision.

The event also featured the formal endorsement of Governor Bassey Otu for a second term by Fusion 196, citing his inclusive and people-centred leadership as the reason for their unanimous support.

Nestlé to Cut 16,000 Jobs Globally in Major Cost-Saving Move

Nestlé, the world’s largest food and beverage company, has announced plans to lay off about 16,000 employees worldwide over the next two years as part of a sweeping cost-cutting initiative.

The company said the restructuring aims to save up to 3 billion Swiss francs (about $3.7 billion) by 2027, as it seeks to streamline operations and adapt to changing global market conditions.

According to a statement released on Thursday, the layoffs will affect both factory and office roles across multiple regions, though Nestlé emphasized that measures would be taken to support affected staff.

The company said the decision was driven by rising production costs, inflationary pressures, and the need to simplify its global operations to remain competitive.

Nestlé, which employs more than 270,000 people globally, noted that the cost-cutting plan would focus on “increasing efficiency, digital transformation, and portfolio optimization,” while maintaining its commitment to product quality and innovation.

Analysts say the move reflects broader challenges facing multinational consumer goods companies amid slowing demand, fluctuating commodity prices, and higher logistics costs.

Nestlé’s Chief Executive Officer, Mark Schneider, said the restructuring would “position the company for long-term sustainable growth” and ensure that “resources are directed toward innovation, consumer value, and emerging market expansion.”

Senate Confirms Professor Joash Amupitan as New INEC Chairman

The Senate has confirmed the appointment of Professor Joash Amupitan as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The confirmation followed the consideration and adoption of the report of the Senate Committee on the Independent National Electoral Commission during Thursday’s plenary.

Professor Amupitan, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and former Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Jos, was nominated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to succeed Professor Mahmood Yakubu, whose tenure recently ended.

Lawmakers who spoke during the confirmation described Professor Amupitan as a distinguished academic and legal scholar with a strong record of public service. They expressed optimism that his appointment would further strengthen the credibility and independence of the nation’s electoral process.

With his confirmation, Professor Amupitan is expected to lead the electoral body in preparations for upcoming off-cycle governorship elections and the 2027 general elections.

PGF DG: Six More Governors Set to Join APC Before 2027

The Director-General of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), Mr. Folorunso Aluko, has disclosed that six more governors are expected to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) before the end of 2027, which would increase the party’s control from 24 to at least 30 states across the federation.

Aluko made the remark on Thursday during the PGF Quarterly Strategy Meeting of Information Commissioners from APC-led states, held in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

He said the meeting served as a coordination hub for the communication systems of APC-controlled states and was aimed at strengthening strategic alignment and messaging ahead of the next electoral cycle.

“It is the nerve centre of coordination for Nigeria’s subnational communication system. We are reviewing progress. We are strengthening our strategic posture and aligning every message with measurable impact,” Aluko said.

He expressed optimism about the ruling party’s outlook, stating that the APC remained firmly positioned to achieve its political goals.

“As we look towards 2027, our conviction remains firm. The APC will grow stronger. Our states will increase in number and our people will prosper.

“By the grace of God and the will of Nigerians, we are confident that the PGF will rise from today’s 24 states to at least 30 states before the end of 2027,” he said.

Aluko described governance as a continuous process, stressing the importance of unity and coordination between federal and state governments.

“Governance is a relay and not an ordinary race. Each of us holds a baton in the long journey of nation building,” he stated.

He urged the Information Commissioners to maintain a unified communication approach and to align state policies with the broader federal vision.

“As we celebrate here in Maiduguri, let us reaffirm our shared resolve to align state action with federal vision, to speak with one voice, to act with integrity and to serve with renewed hope,” Aluko added.

Fagbemi: Presidential Pardon List Under Legal Review, No Inmate Released Yet

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), has clarified that none of the inmates listed for clemency under the President’s recent exercise of the prerogative of mercy have been released.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Fagbemi explained that the list is still undergoing a final administrative review to ensure compliance with all legal and procedural requirements before any release order is signed.

According to him, “The Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice wishes to clarify that no inmate approved for clemency under the recent exercise of the President’s power of prerogative of mercy has been released from custody. The process remains at the final administrative stage, which includes a standard review to ensure that all names and recommendations fully comply with established legal and procedural requirements before any instrument of release is issued.”

Fagbemi noted that the final stage of the process, following approval by the Council of State, involves issuing instruments that formalize the decision for each beneficiary. He added that this phase allows for a last review “for remedial purposes, if any,” before forwarding the documents to the Controller-General of Corrections for implementation.

He emphasized that the verification step is a standard protocol designed to uphold transparency and due diligence.

“The Honourable Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice appreciates the public’s vigilance and constructive feedback, which continue to strengthen institutional integrity. Public engagement is always welcome, as it demonstrates that Nigerians care deeply about justice and good governance,” the statement continued.

Fagbemi further assured that there is no delay in the process, stressing that “it is simply following the law to the letter to ensure that only those duly qualified benefit from the President’s mercy. As soon as all legal and procedural checks are concluded, the public will be duly informed. The rule of law does not rush; it ensures fairness.”
