In a notable step towards improving information distribution across the Central and Northern Senatorial Districts, the Cross River State House of Assembly has earnestly called on the state government to upgrade the antiquated equipment at the Ikom station of the Cross River Broadcasting Corporation (CRBC).

During a session in the Assembly, Hon. Samuel Neji Abang, who represents the Ikom 1 State Constituency, presented a well-structured motion that underscored the station’s vital significance since its inception in 2003. He remarked that the establishment of CRBC was warmly embraced as it effectively bridged the information gaps within the community. However, it now finds itself in dire straits, compared to being on life support, primarily because of outdated equipment and increasing operational costs. “This decline has resulted in a troubling loss of revenue, as numerous residents are turning to neighboring states for dependable broadcasting services.”

Hon. Neji appealed to the leadership of the Otu administration, known for promoting a “Season of Sweetness,” to promptly tackle the urgent challenges facing CRBC Ikom. He highlighted the necessity of restoring the station’s ability to adequately inform the public about government programs and initiatives, thus significantly enhancing potential revenue through sponsored advertisements. He advocated for the immediate enhancement of broadcasting equipment and a commitment to proper funding.

“Today’s motion seeks to convince the state government to elevate CRBC Ikom to align with global standards, thereby fulfilling the information requirements of the Central and Northern Senatorial Districts,” Hon. Neji stated. He reminisced about the period when the station flourished in 2003, urging renewed efforts to reestablish both radio and television broadcasts for the benefit of the populace and the state as a whole.

Hon. Neji also encouraged the acquisition and installation of modern, eco-friendly broadcasting technologies, especially solar-powered options, to mitigate the soaring diesel costs that have significantly affected the station’s operations. He further emphasized the urgent need for sufficient funding to enable CRBC Ikom to operate continuously.

The motion, described as timely and responsive to the needs of the community, garnered widespread support from fellow lawmakers, who expressed their commitment to revitalising CRBC Ikom. Many pointed out the hardships faced by Cross Riverians in places like Yakurr, Abi, Boki, Ogoja, Bekwara, Yala, Obudu, and Obanliku, who have been forced to rely on stations from Enugu, Benue, and Ebonyi for their news, thus separating them from critical developments in their home state.

The Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, RT. Hon. Elvert Ayambem praised the motion’s sponsor for addressing the crucial information needs of the Central and Northern Senatorial Districts. He acknowledged Ikom’s increasing status as a commercial hub and reiterated the importance of a functional, efficient, eco-friendly, and standardized broadcasting facility such as CRBC Ikom. He stated,

“We have wholeheartedly supported this motion, emphasizing our dedication to enhancing the living standards in the state. The 10th Assembly will tirelessly strive to ensure the fulfillment of this objective. Thank you for this impactful motion aimed at addressing the information challenges faced by our people.”

The Chief of Staff to the Governor of Cross River State, Hon. Emmanuel Ironbar, has received a prestigious National Leadership Award as Nigeria’s Best Chief of Staff. He received the award on Thursday in Maitama, Abuja.

Chief Perry Opara, the energetic Chairman of the Organising Committee, expressed the importance of the event, revealing that the National Leadership Awards Selection Committee had acknowledged Ironbar for his substantial contributions to the Otu administration and the overall progress of the state. “These honorees have not only shown exceptional leadership but have also proven their steadfast commitment to improving their ministries and, consequently, the welfare of Cross River State,” Opara declared.

According to Opera, the National Leadership Awards, now celebrating its 22nd anniversary, is recognised for honouring individuals who have achieved significant advancements across various sectors, fostering societal growth. Opara shared his sincere desire that this year’s awards would inspire a revitalized sense of dedication to public service. He encouraged the awardees to continue their noble endeavors to elevate their state and the nation.

Receiving the award, the Chief of Staff Ironbar expressed genuine gratitude for the acknowledgment, attributing the team’s achievements to the visionary leadership of Governor Otu. “With a governor who exemplifies exceptional versatility and competence at the helm, we are motivated to take proactive measures in our roles, ensuring that every aspect of Cross River flourishes,” Ironbar asserted confidently.

The Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Elvert Ayambem, has committed the 10th Assembly to collaborate with Local Government Chairmen in the State for the development of grassroots initiatives.

During a meeting of the Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee with Council Chairpersons held at the Assembly’s Complex in Calabar, Ayambem urged them to focus on human capital development, good governance, and accountability while advising them to involve their Vice Chairpersons in the operations of their Councils.

The Speaker emphasized that the State Governor, Senator Bassey Edet Otu, is dedicated to enhancing the well-being of Cross Riverians, including those living in rural areas, and called for the Chairmen’s support to realize the Governor’s ambitious plans. “Our governor is making significant efforts to better the State; he requires everyone’s assistance. You play an essential role in fulfilling the Governor’s ambitious objectives. Please operate a cohesive administration, engage your Vice Chairmen and other stakeholders, and guarantee a fair distribution of the appointments sanctioned for you by the Local Government Law.”

In his address, the Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee and Member representing Yala 1 State Constituency, Hon Odey Brian Wonah, stated that the meeting aimed to help the Lawmakers get acquainted with the LG Chairmen and provide them with guidance on regulations and proper conduct while in office.

Odey also congratulated the Chairmen on their recent electoral victories and encouraged them to perform their duties efficiently and effectively, noting that his committee would collaborate with them to promote accountability and transparency.

The lawmakers expressed their appreciation to Governor Bassey Otu for creating a conducive environment for the state’s progress. “I express gratitude to our Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, for his good governance and for establishing an environment that allows all sectors to prosper. Governor Otu has accomplished much; security has significantly improved, allowing us to rest easy. In terms of infrastructure, he has made considerable progress, and in welfare, civil servants and pensioners are happy due to the consistent payment of salaries and pensions.”

Other lawmakers, including the Deputy Leader, Rt Hon Davies Etta (Abi), Hon Okon Owuna (Akamkpa 1), Hon Samuel Abang (Ikom 1), and Hon Linus Etim (Akamkpa 2), all encouraged the LG Chairmen to foster grassroots development, ensure accountability, transparency, enhance IGR, and adopt best practices while governing their Councils.

In his comments, the Auditor General for Local Government, Dr Oden Eni, highlighted the significance of efficient service delivery at the LG level. He reiterated the necessity for the Chairmen to maintain accurate accounting records and underscored the importance of adhering to audit laws, regulations, and circulars.

The Auditor General further instructed the Chairmen to regularly submit audit reports to his office to improve effective guidance and collaboration while advising them against taking loans.

Speaking on behalf of his fellow Chairmen, the Chairman of Yakurr, Hon Yibala Inyang, expressed gratitude to the Lawmakers and the Auditor General for their guidance and assured them that they would follow the provided instructions. He also pledged that the Chairmen would steer clear of actions that could endanger the synergy with the House.

Ekpe Society, a respected traditional institution of the Efik people, has expressed heartfelt appreciation to the Governor of Cross River State, Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu, for his timely intervention in halting the controversial Nkot Mbok event, which the group claims blatantly violated the sanctity of Efik traditions.

In a letter signed by Ekpe Efik Ibeku, the society commended Governor Otu for his decisive action in preserving the integrity of the sacred Ekpe masquerade, a fundamental pillar of Efik culture and spirituality.

The society acknowledged the importance of fostering unity among Efik, Efut, and Abakpa youth but emphasized that such efforts must not come at the expense of desecrating their revered traditions.

The Ekpe Society outlined multiple transgressions committed by the organizers of Nkot Mbok, stressing their disregard for Ekpe laws and protocols. Among the key violations were:

1. Unauthorized Processions:

According to Ekpe laws, all processions must begin and end at recognized Ekpe lodges, where specific rites are performed.

The organizers of Nkot Mbok, however, designated an unrecognized muster point, raising concerns about the authenticity of their masquerades.

2. Lack of Approval:

Ekpe displays require authorization from lodges with jurisdiction over the area of the procession.

Nkot Mbok organizers failed to obtain such approvals, creating the potential for confrontations and disorder.

3. Involvement of Females:

It is against Ekpe tradition for females, whether initiates or non-initiates, to approach the sacred Idem Ikwo (Ekpe masquerade).

The society condemned the event organizers for allowing women to take selfies with and even hug the Idem Ikwo, an act deemed a desecration of the institution.

4. Participation of Non-Initiates:

Non-initiates are prohibited from taking part in Ekpe processions. The organizers of Nkot Mbok, however, permitted widespread participation by non-initiates, in violation of Ekpe laws.

5. Curfew Violations:

Ekpe masquerades are forbidden from being outside after 6 p.m., but Nkot Mbok extended their activities until 9 p.m., with some masquerades even unmasking in public, further compounding the violations.

6. Political Involvement:

The Ekpe Society reiterated that the Ekpe institution is spiritual and should remain free from political interference.

They criticized the event organizers for attempting to drag Ekpe into political matters, warning of the potential consequences of such actions.

The Ekpe Society reaffirmed its position that unity among youths should be pursued in ways that respect and honor the traditions of the Efik people. They praised Governor Otu for his decisive intervention, describing him as a true son of the Efik, Efut, and Abakpa communities.

“His Excellency has proven himself to be a true custodian of Efik heritage, committed to preserving our rich traditions.

His intervention not only protected the Ekpe institution but also ensured the safety of lives and properties in our state,” the letter concluded.

The Chief Executive Officer of Sentrytimes, a Cross River State based media organisation, Denis Inakefe popularly known as Media Chief Priest, was honoured by the National Association of Obanliku Students, the University of Calabar Chapter (NAOS-UCC) with a Meritorious Award, on Friday at Etaval Event Centre, Calabar.

According to the lead organiser, Come Samuel Ayu, who is the current NAOS – WW President, the award was given in recognition of Denis Inakefe’s outstanding support and valid contributions to the growth of the association and NAOSITES.

Receiving the award, the Sentrytimes CEO lauded the initiative of the Comrade Ayu-led NAOS for putting up such an event, stating that it was the first of its kind witnessed in recent times. He thanked NAOS-UCC for the honour bestowed on him while assuring future support for the growth and development of the body. He went on to support the organisers with a donation of Fifty Thousand Naira (50,000).

The Executive Chairman of Obanliku, Hon. Sunny Ayang, JP, has extended his good wishes to the newly appointed Pro-Chancellor of the University of Cross River State, Ntufam Barr. Fidelis Ugbo.

In his congratulatory message, Hon. Sunny Ayang described the appointment of Ntufam Fidelis Ugbo as well-deserved, while adding that his commitment to serving Cross River State and the Nation is not in doubt.

Hon. Sunny further thanked the governor, His Excellency, Senator (Prince) Bassey Edet Otu, for appointing an illustrious son and father of Obanliku into this amiable office.

Ntufam Fidelis had previously served Cross River State and the country in different capacities, including as Director of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Executive Secretary, National Planning Commission, Commissioner, and Secretary to the Cross River State Government.

He is the current Chairman of the Obanliku Development Advisory Council and an accomplished expert in the economic and financial legal sectors.

The Executive Chairman of Obanliku, Honourable Chief Sunny Ayang JP, has extended his heartfelt congratulations and support to the newly recruited Nigerian Police Constables hailing from Obanliku. In a visit filled with pride and encouragement, Hon Ayang emphasised the importance of duty and adherence to the law as the constables embark on their new roles within the police force.

Hon Sunny Ayang visited on Thursday, following the successful passing out parade of the police recruits which was held at the Odukpani Training College in Cross River State.

During the visit, Hon Ayang expressed his deep appreciation for the dedication and hard work that the young policemen and women demonstrated throughout their training.

Hon Ayang urged them to uphold the values of professionalism and integrity as they serve their communities. “As newly sworn police officers, your actions will reflect not only on your integrity but also on the reputation of the police force and the trust of the citizens you are sworn to protect,” Hon Ayang stated.

The Chairman encouraged them to embrace their roles with a sense of duty, compassion, and the determination to foster peace and security within Obanliku and beyond. He also supported the policemen and women in the celebration with a cash gift.

According to one of the newly recruited constables, Moses Ejikang, who was facilitated by the Chairman, the visit by the chairman highlighted Hon Ayang’s commitment to supporting Obanliku youths and local law enforcement and ensuring a safer environment for all residents.
