The Executive Chairman of Obudu Local Government Council, Hon. Peter Akonfe Undiandeye, has restated his steadfast commitment to ensuring peace and security across the local government area.

 

Speaking to the press and constituents at the Obudu Local Government Secretariat, Hon. Undiandeye highlighted recent efforts by his administration to address pressing security issues.

 

In a notable development, the Chairman facilitated the apprehension of Mathias Amunde, a 24-year-old man accused of killing his mother and dumping her remains in a well on December 24, 2024.

 

He commended his Special Adviser on Peace and Security, Mr. Ikem Emmanuel, and his team for their professionalism and dedication, which led to the suspect’s arrest in Abo village, Boki Local Government Area.

 

Hon. Undiandeye also praised the collaborative efforts of the Divisional Police Officers of Obudu and Boki Divisions, alongside their teams and local community leaders, for their crucial role in the apprehension of the suspect.

 

In a related development, the Chairman participated in a strategic security meeting with his counterparts from Kwande and Vandeikya Local Government Areas in Benue State, Hon. Neji Vitalis and Hon. Dennis Akura, respectively.

 

This meeting was convened following an alleged attack on three Obudu indigenes in Adikpo, Kwande Local Government Area, on January 5, 2025. Tragically, the attack claimed one life, while the others were rescued through prompt intervention.

 

Hon. Undiandeye, who paid a condolence visit to the family of the deceased, expressed his deep sorrow over the incident and extended his heartfelt condolences. He called for calm and urged the bereaved family and residents to remain peaceful, assuring them that the suspects involved had been apprehended and would face justice.

 

The Chairman reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to maintaining law and order and vowed to continue working with security agencies and neighboring councils to foster peace and stability in the local government area.

The Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem has praised Governor Bassey Otu for his developmental strides in the State as he received a well renovated and furnished Speaker’s Lodge, handed over by the Governor on Thursday in Calabar.

 

Hon. Elvert Ayambem stated that “the Speaker’s Lodge is far more than a structure, it is a symbol of vision, commitment, and the unity of purpose that defines the current administration. His Excellency has once again demonstrated his deep respect for the legislative arm of government and his belief in creating an environment where leaders can serve with excellence”, Ayambem noted.

According to the Speaker in his appreciation message on his official Facebook Page, noted that the delivery of the monumental project reflects Governor Otu’s genuine dedication to empowering institutions and advancing the cause of governance in Cross River State. “I am profoundly grateful for this incredible gesture, which is not just a physical space but a proof of the Governor’s enduring legacy of service and infrastructural transformation. His Excellency has shown that leadership is not just about promises but about actions that speak volumes for the future of our state.”

The Executive Chairman of Obanliku, Hon. Sunny Ayang, on Tuesday, met with representatives of Bayalele and Kabun communities of Basang Ward, including the Basang Development Association and the Divisional Police Officer, at his office to intervene in the crisis between the two concerned communities to restore and sustain peaceful coexistence.

Recently, the two neighboring communities were engaged in a clash whose root cause is yet to be substantiated. The situation led to assault, attempted murder, destruction of properties, and looting of properties worth millions of naira from the affected individuals. The prompt intervention of the Obanliku Divisional Police Officer ( DPO ), CSP Lasbrey, led to the arrest of some suspects and accomplices as well as the recovery of some looted items, including motorcycles.

The Basang Development Association (BDA) President, Hon. Anyawho, who spoke on behalf of the Basang communities, appealed for the release of the detainees to enable them to get back home and wade into the matter through a traditional approach that will ensure lasting peace between the conflicting communities. He emphasized that there is no historical trace of a crisis between the two communities. Hence, he is optimistic that the matter will be resolved. The chairman of the Basang Traditional Rulers Association and chiefs of the affected communities also spoke in support of their resolve towards handling the matter in the traditional setting if the DPO hid their appeal.

The DPO, however, expressed his readiness to grant the detainees bail if conditions are met and proper approval is sought from the Cross River State Commissioner of Police, considering the gravity of the case instituted.

The Chairman of Council, Hon. Sunny Ayang, in his response, admonished both parties to see themselves as brothers and, hence, should avoid any situation to tear them apart. He added that as a “Home man for the Home job”, he believes this matter can be handled at the customary level, adding that the traditional heads of both conflicting communities should attest their readiness to support the police by providing the suspects and accomplices whenever the need arises. He further expressed his readiness to collaborate with the Commissioner of Police and the communities towards ensuring the return of peace to the troubled communities.

A highlight of the meeting was a handshake by the chiefs with the executive chairman, signifying a peaceful resolution. The Vice President of BDA, Ukpangvum Godwin, thanked the Chairman for a swift intervention while assuring him that peace will certainly return to the area.

The meeting, which was well attended, had the Vice chairman of the council, Secretary, Obanliku CRO, DPO, Special Adviser on Peace and Security, Legal Adviser, BDA president, and his vice, Basang Chiefs, among others in attendance.

Elvert Ayambem has fervently encouraged his colleagues to reignite their commitment to serving the populace, highlighting the significance of entering the new year with a united vision and shared resolve.

Rt. Hon. Ayambem made this known during the plenary session, which was held at the Assembly Chambers on Tuesday in Calabar. He expressed his aspirations for a harmonious and effective legislative session.

 

Reflecting on the holiday period, Ayambem characterized it as a time for reflection and gratitude. He urged members to utilize the energy and insights gained during the recess to improve the quality of their legislative discussions and decisions. “The challenges we face are considerable,” he noted, “but through unity, focus, and steadfast determination, we can reach noteworthy milestones that will benefit all Cross Riverians.”

 

The Speaker underscored the necessity for the House to emphasize teamwork and cooperation above political or ideological disputes. He expressed that harmony within the legislature is crucial for achieving the state’s ambitious developmental goals. “As representatives of the citizens, it is essential that we foster an environment of mutual respect and understanding. Let us rise above partisan divides and concentrate on what truly matters—the welfare of our constituents and the advancement of our state,” he asserted.

 

Rt. Hon. The Chairman of the GFO Orim Foundation and Governing Council Member of the Federal College of Education in Bichi, Kano State, Chief Hon (Dr) Martin Orim, has received an honorary award from the National Youth Council of Nigeria’s (NYCN), Alege/Ubang Chapter on Saturday in his hometown of Okuriseng.

The President of the National Youth Council of Nigeria of Alege/Ubang Chapter, Ogbe Joseph Ironsi, while presenting the award, stated that the award was in honour and recognition of Chief Martin Orim’s unwavering dedication to youth empowerment and community development. He further noted that the award was in recognition of his many philanthropic works and a sustained commitment over the years to supporting students and improving the lives of less privileged persons.

Meanwhile, the National Association of Obudu Students Worldwide (NAOS-Ww), presented Chief Martin Orim with an award of excellence for his many humanitarian efforts through his Foundation. Presenting the award, the President Of the National Association of Obudu Students Worldwide, Comrade Gabriel Bitte, along with his Executives, prayed for more grace and opportunities for Chief Orim to enable him to impact more on society.Receiving the award, Chief Orim appreciated the President and the organization for finding him worthy of the recognition, assuring more commitment to youth and community development. Also during the award presentation, Chief Orim donated a well-equipped Skill Acquisition Centre in Okuresing to the chapter of the Youth Council led by Comrade Ogbe Joseph. He further charged the youths to take advantage of his Foundation’s training programs and empowerment to better their lives.

“It is special for me to use my platform to give back to my people and help those in need,” Orim stated. I am proud of the lives we have positively impacted and humbled to know that the resources we have provided will benefit future generations.”

In the exercise of his prerogative of mercy, Cross River State Governor, Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu, has granted unconditional pardon pursuant to Section 212 (1) (a) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (Amended) to 45 convicts with minor offenses.

The Governor’s action, in the spirit of the new year and the People First Mantra of his administration, was contained in the approval given to the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Ededem Ani.

The pardoned inmates were convicted of various offenses ranging from felony, stealing, breaking and entering, assault, threats to life, cultism, armed robbery, illegal entry, logging and unlawful possession, conspiracy, assault and threatening violence, and malicious damage, among a few others.

Governor Otu explained that it’s important to give a second chance to those pardoned and considered reformed, as well as the need to decongest the prison.
