According to the family, former President Buhari died at a Clinic in London, United Kingdom at about 4.30 pm, following a prolonged illness.
Former President Buhari was twice elected Nigeria’s President in 2015 and 2023.
He also served as military head of state between January 1984 and August 1985.

Listening to him brought back memories of Chukwuemeka Chikelu’s days as Minister of Information and Communication. Ayambem’s calm yet commanding presence echoed that same era of articulate public service. Since the dawn of the Fourth Republic, few have embodied that blend of eloquence, responsiveness, and grounded leadership.

As Senator Liyel Imoke clocks 64 years, the Chief of Staff to the Governor of Cross River State, Hon. Emmanuel Ironbar, has described the former Governor as “a timeless influence whose contributions to leadership, governance, and generational mentorship remain unmatched in Cross River’s Current history.”
In a special tribute issued on Thursday in Calabar by His Special Assistant on media, Mr Patrick Asuquo, Hon. Ironbar reflected on the former Governor’s life not just in terms of political office, but as a quiet architect of enduring institutions, a stabilizer in turbulent times, and a cultivator of talent across the public and private sectors.
“Senator Imoke’s legacy is not written only in policies or projects; it is engraved in the lives he shaped, the leadership culture he instilled, and the bridges he built in silence,” Ironbar said.
According to him, Imoke’s most remarkable strength was his ability to empower others without drawing attention to himself. “He redefined the meaning of leadership for many of us. In him, we saw that you could lead with calm, correct without noise, and build without applause. The system he left behind was one that encouraged thinking, creativity, and merit,” he said.
Ironbar, who has continued to observe Imoke’s leadership influence over the years, described him as “a man who saw public service not as performance but as purpose.”
“At 64, Senator Imoke remains one of the most quietly influential figures in the democratic evolution of Cross River State. He empowered youth long before it became a buzzword. In a demonstration of intergovernmental collaboration, the Executive Chairman of Obanliku Local Government Area, Hon. Chief (Dr.) Sunny Ayang, JP, on Monday, 7th July 2025, received a delegation from the Inspectorate Unit of the Cross River State Ministry of Local Government Affairs.
The visit, aimed at assessing ongoing developmental projects and strengthening governance processes, was marked by a commendation of the Council’s efforts in transforming the local landscape. Welcoming the inspectors, Hon. Ayang emphasized his administration’s commitment to initiating and executing people-oriented projects, noting that the visible progress on ground aligns with the documented evidence presented to the ministry.
The inspection team, made up of Engr. Harrison Ogar (Civil Engineer), Mrs. Victoria Ekpo (Estate Valuer), and Mr. Okpe Joseph (Quantity Surveyor), assessed several projects implemented under the Ayang-led administration. These included the newly constructed Obanliku Local Government Education Authority Office, the ongoing Modern Market project, vehicles procured for the council’s transport scheme, the ALGON Clinic in Utanga, renovated temporary offices for the Chairman and Vice Chairman, and the newly installed solar-powered systems across the council.
