The Progressives Congress (APC) in Cross River State has extended warm birthday wishes to Chief (Dr.) Sunny Ayang JP, the Executive Chairman of Obanliku Local Government Area, in celebration of his birthday anniversary.

According to the statement, the party’s State Chairman, Alphonsus Ogar Eba Esq., JP, and the entire State Executive Committee described Chief Ayang as a transformational leader whose life journey—from his roots in Buya community to his academic achievements at Imo State University—reflects resilience and purpose.

The APC highlighted Ayang’s early service in the Nigerian Police Force in the late 1970s, his rise within the political ranks of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Obanliku, and his impactful roles as Director General of Petroleum Monitoring and member of the Anti-Deforestation Task Force in Cross River State.

“Painful Loss for All of Us”: C’River Deputy Governor Visits Obudu Cattle Ranch Bus Crash Victims

the aftermath of the tragic accident that occurred on Saturday, May 3, at Ikwette community near the Obudu Ranch Resort, Deputy Governor of Cross River State, Rt. Hon. Peter Odey, has paid a heartfelt visit to the injured survivors.

 

The accident, which happened in Obanliku Local Government Area, claimed the lives of six individuals and left seven others injured, following the reported brake failure of a commercial vehicle transporting tourists from the ranch.

On Sunday afternoon, the Deputy Governor arrived at Sacred Heart Catholic Hospital in Obudu, where the injured are receiving treatment. He expressed deep sorrow over the incident and offered condolences on behalf of the state government.

“This is a painful loss for all of us,” Rt. Hon. Odey said. “We pray that God comforts the families of the deceased and grants them the strength to bear this irreparable loss.”

He assured the victims of the state government’s full support throughout their recovery process and prayed for their quick healing, offering words of comfort and encouragement.

 

The Deputy Governor also pledged that the bereaved families would not be left to face the tragedy alone, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to supporting them during this difficult time.

He took a moment to commend the swift intervention of emergency responders, including Nigerian Army personnel stationed at the Ranch Resort, for their rapid and effective action at the scene of the crash.

 

Accompanied by clergymen, government officials, and guided by medical personnel, Odey visited the wards where the victims are being treated.

 

According to eyewitness reports, the accident occurred as the vehicle, descending from the Ranch Resort, lost control while approaching a sharp bend at the Ikwette community, a steep area located at the base of the Obudu hill. Brake failure is suspected to be the cause of the tragic incident.

 

The state continues to mourn the loss of lives and prays for the full recovery of the injured.

According to eyewitnesses and preliminary investigations, the group had just concluded a guided tour of the popular Obudu Mountain Resort and were descending the steep terrain when the accident occurred. The bus, owned by the Enugu Catholic Diocese, was carrying thirteen individuals at the time of the crash.

Emergency services, including personnel from the Nigerian Army stationed at the resort, responded swiftly to the scene, providing immediate medical assistance and transporting the injured to nearby hospitals.

The Diocese confirmed that the group was led by a Reverend Father and comprised mainly of seminarians in training. While the names of the deceased are being withheld pending family notification, Church officials have expressed deep sorrow over the loss.

“This is a deeply painful moment for the Church and the families involved,” said a representative of the Diocese. “We ask for prayers and support as we navigate this difficult time.”

Authorities have launched a formal investigation into the incident. Early findings suggest that brake failure is the probable cause of the devastating crash.

(Dr.) Martin Orim , joined other top government officials, dignitaries, family members, and sympathisers in Ogoja Local Government Area to pay last respects to the late Mrs. Alice Ababa Agbe (née Odey), elder sister of Cross River Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Peter Odey.

Hon. Martin Orim visited the Deputy Governor’s residence to offer condolences, and later to the venue of the burial where he described the late Mrs. Agbe as a woman of exceptional compassion, strength, and dedication to service. He noted the profound sense of loss her passing brings and prayed for God’s comfort and strength for the Odey family.

While commiserating with the Deputy Governor, Dr. Orim praised Odey’s steadfast commitment to public service despite his personal grief, calling his resilience both admirable and inspirational.

The solemn gathering had in attendance the Governor of Cross River State, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Anthony Owan Enoh; High Chief Higgins Peters; RT Hon Legor Idagbo, Executive Chairman of Bekwara Hon Theresa Ushie, and well-wishers united in honouring the life and legacy of Mrs. Agbe.
