Hon Martin Orim Receives Award of Excellence, Hosts Ukalu Nation, Declares Intention to Run in 2027

The Chairman of the GFO Orim Foundation and Member of the Council at the Federal College of Education (FCE), Bichi, Kano State, Hon. Chief (Dr.) Martin Orim has been honoured with an Award of Excellence by the Cross River North United Movement in recognition of his remarkable contributions to human capacity development and infrastructure in the Northern Senatorial District of Cross River State.

The award presentation, led by the Director-General of the movement, Dr. Mrs. Regina Adinyang, took place on Sunday at Chief Martin Orim’s residence in Obudu Local Government Area. Dr. Adinyang emphasized that the award was not only a tribute to Orim’s past achievements but also an encouragement for him to continue striving for greater impact in the district.

In his acceptance speech, Chief Orim expressed deep gratitude to the group, pledging to maintain his unwavering commitment to the development of society. He urged the organization to continue their support for progress and unity in the region.

In a related gathering, Chief Orim hosted the Ukalu Nation, alongside party loyalists and supporters, in a dual-purpose celebration that also served as a consultative forum. Community leaders used the occasion to urge him to contest in the 2027 general elections.

Heeding their calls, Chief Orim officially declared his intent to vie for a seat in the Federal House of Representatives in 2027. He emphasized that his ambition remains aligned with the directives of the All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership in Cross River State.

“I have listened to your wishes and your desire for me to run for an elective position come 2027. I therefore officially express my desire to contest for a seat in the Federal House of Representatives – subject, however, to the guidance and directives of the leadership of our great party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), Cross River State Chapter, under the capable leadership of our performing Governor, Sen. Prince Bassey Edet Otu, and his Deputy, Hon. Peter Odinga Odey,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of the Ukalu Nation, Hon. Philip Ikpa, the group’s coordinator, welcomed Orim’s declaration and pledged the community’s full backing toward the realization of his political ambition.

Chief Orim’s residence became a hub of celebration during the Easter holiday, welcoming a stream of dignitaries. Notable visitors included the Executive Chairman of Obanliku, Hon. Chief (Dr.) Sunny Ayang, who thrilled the crowd with generous cash support; the Vice Chairman of Obudu, Miss Rhoda Ashong; and Mr. Emmanuel Bepeh, Hon Pydel Aben, among others.

The day’s activities continued with a visit from the Tiger Support Club of FCE Obudu, who came to felicitate with Chief Orim for the Easter season and reaffirmed their support for his future endeavours.

Momentum Builds as Chief Martin Gains Backing from Obanliku Group Ahead of 2027 Polls, Welcome by Obudu Urban Ward 2.

In a major show of support ahead of the 2027 elections, the Obanliku Solidarity Movement, led by Hon. Anthony Abaka, has formally endorsed Hon. Chief (Dr) Martin Orim for an elective position. The endorsement was announced during a well-attended visit drawing representatives from all ten wards of the Obanliku LGA, to Chief Orim’s residence in Obudu, Cross River State.

Speaking during the visit, Sir Emmanuel Ukobere, one of the leaders of the movement, stated that the group is rallying behind Chief Orim in hopes of reclaiming the Northern Senatorial District and House of Representatives seats.

The delegation praised Chief Orim’s distinguished political track record, philanthropic efforts, human capacity and infrastructural development, and enduring ties to his immediate constituency both during and after his tenure as Chief of Staff to the former Governor of Cross River State.

“We appreciate your tireless commitment to the people,” Ukobere said. “Your continued presence at home during major celebrations is a clear proof of your grassroots connection.”

In his response, Chief Orim expressed heartfelt gratitude for the group’s gesture, describing it as a reflection of their goodwill and dedication to the progress of the District and State at large. He assured the delegation of his intention to engage in broad consultations with constituents before making any final decision, stressing that “true power comes from God.”

In a related development, Chief Orim in company of the Obudu Executive Chairman Hon Peter Akongfe, Vice Chairman Hon Rhoda Ashong, Mr. Emmanuel Bepeh, and his entourage received further backing from the Obudu Urban Ward 2, where he was warmly welcomed by notable figures including Emperor Agiake, Hon. Athletes Blaze Trails in Calabar as Speaker Ayambem Ignites Carnival Hype

The Governor of Cross River State, Sen. Bassey Otu, on Friday flagged off the 2025 Calabar Marathon and Skateathon, reaffirming the state’s preparedness to host the world-renowned Carnival Calabar in December.

 

The Governor, who was represented by the Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem, performed the official flag-off ceremony at Millennium Park in Calabar, where athletes from across the country gathered to compete in the much-anticipated sporting event.

Speaker Ayambem noted that the success of the marathon and skateathon reflects the Otu-led administration’s commitment to peace, youth engagement, and tourism development. He emphasized that Governor Otu has prioritized the security of lives and property, creating an enabling environment for tourism, investment, and innovation.

 

The event saw Plateau State dominate the men’s category, sweeping the top three medals, while Delta State emerged winners in the female category. Cross River State secured third place in the female race, drawing cheers from the home crowd.

According to the Speaker, the marathon and skateathon are further proof that Cross River remains a major force in Nigeria’s tourism and hospitality sector. He invited investors to take advantage of the growing opportunities in the state, driven by a peaceful and business-friendly atmosphere.

 

“This administration is not only committed to sports and tourism but also to building a state where talent, business, and creativity can thrive. Governor Otu has made it clear that Cross River is open for the world peaceful, prepared, and proud of its cultural heritage,” Speaker Ayambem said.

From fragments to force: NORTHCCO’s bold new dawn

On the 21st of April, 2025, three days from today, the Northern Cross River Coalition (NORTHCCO) will not simply convene; it will converge—with clarity, conviction, and a cause that rings louder than ever before. This is more than a General Assembly. It is a reawakening. A gathering not just of people, but of destiny.

 

For too long, the narrative of the Northern zone has been filtered through the aperture of division—its diverse tongues mistaken for dissonance, its complex cultural map misunderstood as chaos. But those days appear over. The April 21st General Assembly marks a turning point: where scattered fragments are gathered, aligned, and transformed into unshakable force.

Here, in the crucible of collective will, something extraordinary will be forged.

 

The NORTHCCO General Assembly is not just a political event—it is a cultural and psychological reckoning. It is where long-held grievances are not brushed aside, but brought to the table with dignity. Where marginalization is met with mobilization. Where silence is replaced with speech, and despair gives way to determination.

C’River Assembly Urges Swift Action on Erosion Threat in Calabar South

The Cross River State House of Assembly has called on the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP) to urgently address severe gully erosion in the Ekeya community, Calabar South LGA.

The motion, sponsored by Hon. Victor Nsa (Calabar South 2 Constituency), highlights the erosion’s devastating impact on infrastructure and access, hindering residents from benefiting from government initiatives.

During the site visit, Speaker Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem reassured residents of the House of Assembly’s commitment to resolving the issue, pledging to engage Governor Sen. Bassey Edet Otu for immediate action. He cited similar successful intervention in Nassarawa Bakoko.

Village head, Chief Austin David, also appealed for state support, acknowledging the Assembly’s swift response while stressing the limits of community-led efforts.

Speaker Ayambem Leads Lawmakers in Resounding Endorsement of Governor Otu, President Tinubu for 2027

The Cross River State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem has unanimously endorsed Governor Bassey Edet Otu and his Deputy, Rt. Hon. Peter Odey Odinga, for a second term in office. The endorsement came during an expanded All Progressives Congress (APC) caucus meeting held on Tuesday at Hoggis Royale Hotel in Calabar.

Speaking on behalf of the Assembly members, Speaker Ayambem praised Governor Otu for his developmental strides in under two years, highlighting his unwavering commitment to the state. “Your Excellency, if you carry on with this strength and enthusiasm, in your second term, you can sit with your legs crossed without doing anything,” he stated.

Justifying the endorsement, Ayambem added, “You cannot change the rule of the game in the middle of the game. Nobody discards a winning team.” He further reaffirmed the unity between the executive and legislative arms of government, expressing gratitude to his colleagues for their continued cooperation and support.

The lawmakers also passed a vote of confidence in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, endorsing him for a second term through a voice vote by Hon. Victor Abang (Mature), Member representing Ikom/Boki Federal Constituency, and seconded by Speaker Ayambem.

Governor Otu’s endorsement follows a wave of similar declarations from the APC state chapter, former Governor Clement Ebri, Minster of State Trade and Investment Senator Owan Enoh, National Assembly members (past and present), local government chairmen (past and present), , commissioners, chapter chairmen, and political Appointees.

Beyond the Allegations: The Untold Story of Cross River’s Role in the NDDC Sports Festival

The just-concluded Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) Sports Festival has sparked a flurry of mixed reactions among Cross Riverians. Many had high hopes that the state would dominate the competition, making the perceived outcome disappointing for some. Among the trending narratives are allegations of poor performance by Cross River State, financial misappropriation claims against the Commissioner for Sports, Mrs. Agnes Atsu, and accusations that the NDDC Commissioner, Rt. Hon. Orok Duke hijacked the games.

One controversial article, written by a certain Patrick Unimke Atsu, whose identity remains questionable, posed pointed questions such as: “Why has the Commissioner for Sports in Cross River State been relegated to the background?” and “Why does Orok Duke continue to dominate and interfere in sports administration, traveling with teams and reportedly allocating millions for logistics, yet offering athletes and officials mere peanuts?”

However, a closer look at the facts reveals a different story – one that may clarify much of the confusion and speculation:

1. The NDDC Sports Festival, according to the Co-Chairman of the maiden Niger Delta Sports Festival, Itiako Ikpokpo, the main objective is not just about winning medals but about identifying and nurturing young, talented athletes with the potential to represent Nigeria on the international stage in the future.

2. For the funding, which seems to be controversial and of major interest to Cross Riverians, the Cross River State Ministry of Sports received a total of #57 million from the NDDC to prepare for the event in Uyo. According to NDDC’s budget breakdown, seven (#7) million was designated for both Specific Training/ Competition equipment, Kitting (wear), and printing and cresting; #12 million was reportedly used by the State Ministry of Sports’ Director of Sports, who handled the purchase of the equipment.

3. While Fifty (#50) million was allocated for the scouting process by the NDDC. According to an insider who pleaded anonymity, the scouting was conducted by Mr Ekanem Ekpenyong, Special Adviser to the Governor on Sports under the supervision of the commissioner for Sports, Hon Agnes Atsu, across the three senatorial districts of the state, adhering to the NDDC’s guideline of scouting for novice athletes — from the North to the Central and South. A total of 450 athletes were selected, registered, camped, and trained in Calabar, where they were fed 3 square meals for 11 days. Upon completion of the 11 days of camping, the 450 athletes were paid ten thousand Naira (#10,000) for those who didn’t stay in camp and eight thousand (#8,000) for those who didn’t stay in camp as training allowances and demobilised them accordingly. After the camping, a total of 313 out of 450 athletes were taken to Uyo for the Sports Festival. Meanwhile, before this time, officials, including coaches and Area Sports Officers, were paid scouting allowances at the Senatorial District and Local Governments levels.

4. An additional thirteen (#13) million was sent directly to Queen Gladys O. Festus, the NDDC Secretary for Cross River (appointed by NDDC specifically for this event), to cover transportation to and from Uyo, and the accommodation, and feeding, medical care, and other logistics were handled by the NDDC local organising Committee. According to findings, the disbursement of the 13 million was not handled directly by the Ministry of Sports but by Gladys.

5. Upon reaching Uyo, the NDDC Commissioner for Cross River State, Rt Hon Orok Duke who was alleged to have “dominated and interfered in sports administration, traveling with teams and reportedly allocating millions for logistics, yet offering athletes and officials mere peanuts”, only attended the flag-off ceremony and was never found anywhere interfering in the management of finances as it concerns the Sports Festival as alleged by a certain Patrick Atsu. Also reports has that he got funding directly from NDDC for his table tennis team, which he travelled with, not through the state government.

6. As it concerns the performance of the athletes, Cross River State secured a total of 31 medals 5 out of which were gold medals, 7 silver medals, and 19 bronze medals. The 31 medals could only place Cross River State first from the bottom table in the medal chart, followed by Abi with 32, Akwa Ibom with 37, Imo with 42, and so on. However, as quoted by the Co-Chairman of the maiden Niger Delta Sports Festival, Itiako Ikpokpo, “The main objective is not just about winning medals but about identifying and nurturing young, talented athletes with the potential to represent Nigeria on the international stage in the future.” Itiako, in an interview, further explained that those so far discovered were between the ages of 14 and 21 years, adding that the Talent Scouting and Mentoring Committee would be in charge of grooming the discovered promising athletes to become future champions. States such as Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Imo etc stand to gain significantly from focusing on younger, emerging talents.

7. From the findings, part of the reason for the poor performance was the lack of investment in the sports sector for over a decade which led to the decay of the sports facilities and relocation of athletes from the state to other well-paying states and foreign countries. However, reports have it that the sector is taking a different dimension as the current government under Governor Bassey Otu is showing keen interest in sports development.

8. For the protest by the athletes, it was reported that four states, including Ondo, Imo, Abia, and Cross River State, protested against delays in their allowances of seventy (70,000) thousand by the NDDC. Following the protest, an NDDC representative addressed the protesters explaining that the delays were due to administrative procedures and some errors arising from unmatched/wrong bank details. In the case of Cross River State, an additional thirty thousand naira was to be given to the athletes. From the thirty thousand, ten thousand was given to the athletes before departure to Uyo and the balance of twenty thousand was to be paid upon return to the state. However, the athletes insisted that they must be paid their due before going back to Calabar, and from the reports, the management complied with their demands.

In light of these facts, it becomes apparent that while there may be room for questions or improvements in coordination, much of the public criticism appears to stem from misinformation or lack of clarity on how the festival was structured and funded. As investigations continue, discussions around the NDDC Sports Festival must remain grounded in verified information, not fiction or politically motivated narratives.

Obanliku Chairman Hon. Sunny Ayang Engages OI, Vows to Tackle Boundary, Security, and Drug Issues 

The Executive Chairman of Obanliku Local Government Council, Hon. Chief (Dr) Sunny Ayang JP, has reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to the development of the local government area, particularly in the areas of infrastructure and security. He made this known during a meeting with the Obanliku Initiative (OI) held on Sunday in Calabar.

Hon. Sunny Ayang commended the Obanliku Initiative for its proactive stance and concern regarding boundary issues within the LGA, especially at the Lishiche axis bordering Benue State. As Chairman of the Boundary Committee and Council, he assured the group that he is well-informed on the boundary matters and has made concerted efforts to address the porous boundaries while ensuring peace and stability in affected areas.

Addressing security concerns raised by the group, especially those related to cattle rearing and the infiltration of foreign elements, the Chairman emphasised that his administration has initiated a community policing program. He revealed that recruitment for the initiative had begun, indicating a proactive step toward curbing insecurity.

Hon. Ayang also expressed deep concern over the rising cases of drug abuse among youths in the LGA, describing it as a major threat to community peace. He cited recent cases where six youths reportedly suffered mental health crises due to hard drug intake. According to the Chairman, to tackle the issue, the council has constituted an Anti-Quackery Committee aimed at combating drug abuse and the illegal distribution of narcotics in the area.

The Chairman further addressed the issue of fraudulent land sales, promising to take decisive action against those involved in such practices. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to empowering indigenous people by awarding local contracts and providing essential amenities across the LGA.

Calling for greater collaboration, Hon. Ayang urged members of the Obanliku Initiative and all stakeholders to join hands in advancing the development of the local government area.

In response, the Obanliku Initiative, led by Mr. Raphael Ugaji, commended the Executive Chairman for honouring their invitation and demonstrating genuine commitment to the progress of Obanliku. The group pledged their continued support for the administration while urging further action on the provision of pipe-borne water and access roads to farms to boost the local economy.

Ovation As Commendations Continue to Trail Betta Edu’s Induction Into Unical Hall of Fame, Conferment Of Grand Ambassador Award

More than one and half decades after leaving the University of Calabar, medical school as a graduate of medicine, Dr. Betta Edu returned to the prestigious institution last month, in a blaze of glory and amid effusive praises, to receive a distinguished award in recognition of her sterling service to her fatherland and humanity as well as for consistently projecting Unical in good light through her impeccable public service record.

The immediate past APC National Women Leader and Honorable Minister was inducted into the University’s Hall of Fame. She was also awarded the Grand Ambassador of Unical.

The fitting and deserving honors were bestowed on Dr. Edu during Unical’s 50th anniversary of its establishment as well as a special convocation.

Dr. Edu was honored alongside the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, GCON, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt Honourable Benjamin Kalu CON, the Executive Governor of Cross River State, Senator (Prince) Bassey Edet Otu, among other top Nigerians from various fields of endeavors.

The process of recognizing Dr. Edu began in early March with an official letter from the University’s management intimating her of the decision to honor her. The read reads in part: “In nominating you for this prestigious award, the University has considered your success in using the knowledge/skills acquired in the University in your chosen field/professional career.

“The University also notes the worthy manner you have flown the flag of integrity for the University both in Nigeria and abroad, your past/future contributions to the development of your Alma mater (Unical), and your pride as an Alumnae”. “You are the face of University of Calabar”

The Unical honor has continued to attract loud ovations to the outspoken Medical Doctor famous for her humanitarian and welfarist inclination.

For example, Unical’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Florence Obi, who personally conferred the honors on Dr. Edu, said: “We are very proud of My daughter, Doctor Betta Edu, for always making the University proud.

The 15th Emir of Kano, HRH Aminu Ado Bayero, commended Dr Edu as a shining star of the younger generation who has continued to distinguish herself as a trailblazer in public service.

Similarly, the Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ, in its congratulatory message to Dr. Edu described the honors on her as ” a testament to Dr. Edu’s unwavering commitment to excellence, leadership, and service to humanity”

The NUJ, in the congratulatory message signed by its Chairman in Cross River State Council, Comrade Bassey, further stressed that “Dr. Edu has continued to distinguish herself as a trailblazer in public service, and her contributions to healthcare, governance, and humanitarian efforts have brought immense pride to Cross River State and Nigeria at large.

“Her recognition by UNICAL reflects not only her personal achievements but also the university’s legacy of producing leaders who make significant impacts both nationally and globally. We particularly commend her passionate commitment to giving back, as demonstrated by her pledge—on behalf of the Class of 2009 Medical School—to contribute ₦15 million towards the completion and equipping of the university’s new medical center”

The Council extolled Dr. Edu’s dedication to progress and nation-building, noting that “it is truly inspiring, and we have no doubt that she will continue to be a shining example of integrity, service, and leadership”

Other well-meaning groups and individuals from the South-South, Niger Delta, Northern Nigeria, and the Middle Belt regions also congratulated D.r Edu on the well-deserved award.

They variously expressed optimism that the honor will spur Dr. Edu, a 2009 graduate of Unical’s Medical School, into doing more for humanity; the groups also wish her even greater heights in all her future endeavours.

The political base of D.R. Ed, the APC, in the AbiLocall Government Area of Cross River State, where she hails, is not left out in the effusive praises and kind words. APC members in the council area and,d indeed, the entire Ebi LGA are delighted that their beloved daughter has continued to attract national and international honors not only for herself but also for the council,l thus putting Abi and its people on the world map.

Unical, of course,e played a critical role in the iconic figure and role model that Dr. Edu has become today, honing her leadership skills from the early days of her student activism as the Vice President of Unical’s Student Union Government, SUG.

Edu herself recognizes Unical’s place in her rise to the top. According to her, “Unical is the very powerful University that actually built the leadership skills in me”
