The Deputy Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Hon. Sylvester Agabi Jnr, has called for integrity and ethical conduct among local government legislators (Councilors). He made this known during a paper presentation at a Capacity Building and Utilization Training organized by the state government in partnership with the Centre for Community Policy and Strategic Development at Dana Hotel in Calabar.
In his lecture titled “The High Standard of Character, Integrity, Charisma, and Moral Behavior Expected of an Honourable Councilor by Society,” Hon. Agabi emphasised that Councilors should be reliable, honest, transparent, and accountable to the public for their actions and decisions. He further highlighted that Councilors must uphold the highest ethical standards by avoiding conflicts of interest and corruption.
The Deputy Speaker also urged Councilors to demonstrate understanding and compassion for the needs and concerns of their constituents. He encouraged them to engage actively with their communities, respond to their needs, and manage public resources responsibly. “By upholding these standards, Honourable Councilors can earn the trust and respect of their constituents,” he stated.
He reassured the Councilors of better welfare packages from Governor Bassey Otu, stating, “The government is sweet because Governor Jesus is ruling the state.”
The three-day Capacity Building and Utilisation Training was declared open by the Cross River State Commissioner for Local Government, Chief Felix Edem, and was attended by former Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, RT Hon. John Gaul Lebo, Hon Eye Bassey, Prof. Jake Otu Enyia, Hon. Thomas Aruku, Hon. Omang C. Omang, Clerk of the CRSHA Barr Catherine Ubi, former Clerk, Mr Jerry Akabisong, and Councilors from the five local government areas of the Cross River State Southern Senatorial District, among others.
