Governors and the Senate: A Call for Democratic Balance {By Okoi Obono-Obla}

A leading political figure from Imo State confided in me what former President Muhammadu Buhari told him during a visit to Daura after leaving office. Buhari remarked that one of his greatest achievements was blocking former governors who sought to move directly from governorship to the Senate.

I share this perspective. Recently, the former Governor of Sokoto State, Attahiru Bafarawa, expressed the same view, underscoring the need for fairness and inclusivity in our democratic process. The Senate should not become a retirement chamber for former governors who have already enjoyed the privilege of serving their states for eight years.

Anyone who has been privileged to serve as Governor for two terms must step aside and allow others the opportunity to contribute their quota to national development. Democracy thrives when diverse voices are heard, when fresh perspectives are allowed to shape policy, and when political offices are not monopolized by a select few.

The practice of governors transitioning seamlessly into the Senate risks entrenching political dominance, stifling new leadership, and undermining the principle of equal opportunity. Nigeria’s progress depends on widening the space for participation, not narrowing it to a cycle of recycled elites.

Conclusion:
The call is simple but profound: let governors who have completed their tenure give way, so that others may rise to serve. This is not just about fairness; it is about strengthening democracy, deepening inclusivity, and ensuring that national development benefits from the contributions of many, not the ambitions of a few.

Assembly Moves to Shift Calabar Suya Arcade to Zoo Garden Over Safety and Congestion Concerns

The Cross River State House of Assembly has urged the State Government to move the Calabar Suya Arcade from Bogobri to the Zoo Garden. The House cited congestion, poor sanitation, and limited space at the current site.

The motion, introduced by Hon. Stanley Nsemo of Calabar Municipality, received full support from members. He recalled that the arcade was created during former Governor Liyel Imoke’s administration to provide a clean, organized space for suya vendors and to support the state’s tourism image. While it has served residents and visitors for years, the rising number of vendors and increased traffic have created health and safety concerns.

Lawmakers agreed that the Zoo Garden offers more room, better hygiene prospects, and improved parking. The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem, described the proposal as timely, saying the relocation would ease traffic, improve sanitation, and create a safer setting for business.

The Vice Chancellor Elect of the University of Calabar, Prof Offiong Effanga Offiong, paid a courtesy visit to the Deputy Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Sylvester Agabi Jnr, at his official residence, where both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to cooperation in the interest of the state and the university community.

Prof Offiong E Offiong expressed gratitude to the Deputy Speaker for his steady support. He noted that the progress made so far had been possible through shared effort and appealed for continued partnership in the tasks ahead. He spoke on the demands placed on public office holders at national, state, and community levels, and stated that reliance on sound judgement and faith remained essential for effective service.

The Deputy Speaker, Rt Hon Agabi thanked the VC Elect for the visit and assured him of his continued cooperation in advancing development. He described Prof Effanga as a round peg in a round hole and expressed confidence that his leadership would help restore the university’s dignity.

The Deputy Speaker recalled the VC Elect’s notable achievements during his tenure as Commissioner for Education, especially in areas that strengthened human capacity and community development. He also offered prayers for continued guidance as both institutions work to serve the people of Cross River State.

Obanliku LGA Reaffirms Confidence in Governor Otu’s Chief of Staff, Hon Emmanuel Ironbar

Obanliku Local Government has expressed renewed confidence in the Chief of Staff to the Governor of Cross River State, Hon Emmanuel Ironbar, following the circulation of a publication described as false and harmful.

In a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Executive Chairman, Ochon John, the council chairman, Hon Dr Sunny Ayang, noted that the report misrepresented the character and public service record of Hon Ironbar. He said the response became necessary to preserve harmony within the administration of Governor Bassey Otu.

The council stated that Hon Ironbar remains a respected figure in Obanliku, with a reputation built on loyalty, discipline and consistent service. His appointment as Chief of Staff was described as a reflection of these qualities and of his long engagement with the political landscape of the state.

The statement highlighted his understanding of political structures across all eighteen local government areas and his steady handling of official duties. According to the chairman, these attributes have supported the smooth functioning of the present administration.

Obanliku leaders and residents were said to stand firmly behind Hon Ironbar, describing attempts to question his commitment to the Governor as contrary to his well-known record.

BREAKING: Crisis Rocks Cross River APC as Chapter Chairmen, Secretaries, Party Faithful Shut Down Party Secretariat, Insist on Eba’s Exit

Tension has erupted within the Cross River State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as 35 chapter chairmen, secretaries and party faithfuls reportedly sealed off the party’s state secretariat in Calabar.

The action, which took place early Wednesday morning, was aimed at preventing the State Chairman, Barr. Alphonsus Eba, and other executive members from gaining access to the premises.

The aggrieved officials cited alleged financial mismanagement and high-handedness as reasons for their action, calling for Eba’s immediate resignation.
