The Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem expressed profound sorrow over the passing of Rt. Hon. Ferdinand Ekok Nzie Okpokam, calling his demise a tragic loss.
During a heartfelt valedictory session held in honour of the late legislator at the Assembly chambers on Friday, Rt Hon Ayambem reflected on the significant contributions that Okpokam made to the development of Cross River State, emphasizing the immense void left by his departure.
Rt. Hon. Ayambem lamented the alarming trend of loss among former legislators, noting that four have passed away in 2024 alone. He underscored his commitment to advocating for stipends for former members to assist them in managing their health needs.
In his moving tribute, Ayambem described Okpokam as a “peaceful and dedicated legislator” who served his constituents with unwavering commitment and merit. He offered prayers for the eternal rest of Okpokam’s soul while seeking divine grace and comfort for his grieving family.
Hon. Omang Omang, the representative for the Bekwara State Constituency, took to the floor to extol the noble qualities of the late Okpokam, praising him as a pivotal figure who played a crucial role in shaping the trajectory of Cross River State.
Several former lawmakers, including notable figures such as Rt. Hon. Fred Osim (Ikom I), Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Idaka (Abi), Rt. Hon. Mark Obi (Boki II), Rt. Hon. M Olom (Yala II), and Rt. Hon. Itam Abang (Boki I), united in their tributes, each highlighting Okpokam’s reliability, integrity, and dedication to peace. They encouraged his wife and children to place their faith in God for comfort and strength during this challenging time.
According to the tribute read by the Assembly’s Clerk, Barr Catherine Ubi, the late Rt. Hon. Okpokam represented the Ikom I State Constituency from 1999 to 2007. He was celebrated as a vocal and experienced legislator, known for his resonant voice that consistently echoed in the Assembly, particularly on matters vital to his constituents’ welfare. During his first term, he was appointed as Chairman of the House Committee on Public Petitions and Human Rights, a role he skillfully managed. Following his re-election in 2003, he took on the prestigious position of Chairman of the House Committee on Business and Rules, while also serving on various other committees.
The late Rt. Hon. Ferdinand Ekok Nzie Okpokam will be laid to rest in his ancestral hometown of Okangha Mkpansi on Saturday, December 21, 2024, marking the end of a remarkable journey of service to his community and state.
