Since yesterday, many versions of the story have circulated across Cross River State concerning the troubling domestic incident involving Cyril Ovat, a member of the Cross River State House of Assembly. The matter has stirred public concern and strong reactions among citizens who expect a higher standard of conduct from those entrusted with public office.

Ovat is not merely a private citizen. As a lawmaker and a public health professional, he holds a position that calls for discipline, restraint, and accountability. For that reason, reports of violence within his home have drawn criticism from many quarters.

Accounts shared by individuals within the Assembly quarters suggest that the dispute began after Ovat reportedly met his wife during a social outing with friends. He was said to have questioned why she was drinking outside and reminded her that she was the wife of an honourable member. The wife reportedly replied that it was harmless recreation. The disagreement continued after they returned home.

Witness accounts claim the situation later escalated inside their residence. The woman was said to have been physically assaulted and forced to seek refuge at the home of another member of the Assembly. A source who requested anonymity said her condition was disturbing when she arrived. The individual reportedly took photographs of her injuries and alerted the leadership of the Cross River State House of Assembly.

The leadership of the Assembly was said to have acted quickly. Officials visited the victim and offered support, including financial assistance through the Legislative Wives Association to ensure she received medical care after she was reportedly left without support from her husband.

Further claims surrounding the dispute deepened public concern. During efforts to resolve the matter privately, Ovat was alleged to have made remarks suggesting he had no desire for marital relations with his wife. This added to earlier complaints that he had been denying her intimacy within the marriage.

The situation soon drew wider attention. Reports indicate that the office of the wife of the Cross River governor later intervened through an administrative representative who delivered assistance to the victim.

Observers also alleged that the situation took another troubling turn when the woman’s phone was seized and her social media account began posting statements dismissing the allegations. Some sources claimed she was restricted from using her phone and her lines were temporarily unreachable. These claims increased public suspicion that attempts were being made to manage the narrative surrounding the incident.

As public pressure grew and photographs of the battered woman circulated online, civil society groups and concerned citizens demanded a clear response. Their argument was simple. Lawmakers cannot make laws for society while appearing to stand above them.

Within twenty four hours, the leadership of the Cross River State House of Assembly announced the suspension of Cyril Ovat from legislative activities while the matter undergoes further review. The step was presented as a measure meant to protect the integrity of the Assembly and allow the allegations to be examined without interference.

Beyond the immediate controversy, the incident has reopened a broader conversation in Nigeria about domestic violence and the responsibilities attached to public office. When those in positions of influence are accused of abuse, the response of institutions often shapes public confidence in justice.

The coming days will determine how the case unfolds. One point is already clear. The credibility of public institutions rests not only on the laws they pass, but also on their willingness to confront misconduct wherever it appears, even within their own ranks.
