On Saturday, more than 2,000 fitness fans gathered in the streets of Calabar, the capital of Cross River State, organized by the Healthy Billionaires Fitness Club, to raise awareness about depression and suicide while promoting a healthier, happier community.

The event marked its fifth consecutive year with the theme “A Walk Against Suicide & Depression,” featuring a 12 km route through Calabar’s carnival routes.

During the event’s flag off, Rt Hon Elvert Ayambe, Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, emphasized the importance of advocating for mental health awareness.

“Participants will begin their walk at the 11/11 roundabout, symbolizing their collective journey toward a brighter future and improved wellness.

Eric Anderson, Chairman of the 5th Year Anniversary Committee, expressed the organization’s strong belief in the principle that “health is wealth” and their dedication to fostering healthy lifestyles.

He noted the themes of previous years, “in 2020 we walked against COVID. In 2021 in commemoration of the World heart day.
In 2022 we walked for peace & security.
In 2023 we walked against Drugs & Mental health. This year’s focus on suicide and depression stems from the ongoing impact these issues have on society.

By the end of the event, Anderson mentioned the club’s intention to engage communities through seminars aimed at tackling these problems.

Additionally, Dr. Bong Duke, CEO of the Cross River State Planning Commission, spoke about government initiatives to help reduce depression among citizens.

He highlighted measures such as ensuring no one goes hungry, improving infrastructure, providing free education, and alleviating financial burdens on parents.

“Recently, the government covered WAEC fees for many indigent students and increased salaries for civil servants, contributing to mental well-being. Moreover, the administration has extended paid maternity leave for breastfeeding mothers, all part of a commitment to promote the health of the community, with goals for Cross River state to be among the healthiest by 2027. Thus, the walk serves not only as a stand against depression and suicide but also as a celebration of overall fitness, he said.
