Obanliku Local Government Area has marked its 35th anniversary with a colourful celebration at the Civic Centre, Sankwala, bringing together political leaders, traditional rulers, community stakeholders, professionals and citizens to reflect on the journey of the LGA and its prospects for the future.
The event, tagged “Obanliku at 35,” provided a platform to commemorate 35 years of the local government’s existence, reflect on challenges overcome, acknowledge progress recorded and renew the collective commitment to building a more united and prosperous Obanliku.
Resource persons, including Mrs. M.T. Ikwen, Ph.D., Hon. Akpi Unwanade and Augustine Ikwen, Ph.D., delivered historical and development-focused presentations on the creation, evolution and growth of Obanliku.
Their contributions highlighted the importance of unity, responsible leadership, youth inclusion, cultural preservation, strategic development and sustained collaboration among stakeholders in shaping the future of the LGA.
The celebration also featured cultural performances by the Obanliku Traditional Maidens Dance Troupes, who added colour to the occasion while showcasing the richness and enduring strength of the area’s cultural heritage.
The anniversary cake was also cut as part of the activities marking the milestone.
The event was chaired by the Executive Chairman of Obanliku LGA, Hon. Amb. Chief Sunny Ayang, JP, who joined other stakeholders in reflecting on the local government’s 35-year journey and emphasising the shared responsibility of government, communities and citizens in consolidating existing achievements and addressing emerging challenges.
Among those in attendance were the Vice Chairman, Hon. Glory Awowoh; Secretary of Council, Joseph Agba, Ph.D.; former Director of CRBC Calabar, Mr. Frank Odey; Hon. Linus Ukpaka; political appointees; traditional and community leaders; stakeholders and distinguished sons and daughters of Obanliku.
Beyond the anniversary celebration, the event reaffirmed the need for greater unity, constructive engagement and purposeful leadership to transform Obanliku’s human, cultural and natural resources into sustainable development.
The celebration also served as a curtain-raiser to the 2026 Obanliku New Yam and Cultural Festival, scheduled for Saturday, August 29, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. at the Infant Jesus Schools Field, Sankwala.
The festival will be held under the theme: “Celebrating Our Heritage, Our Pride, Our Prosperity.”
As Obanliku commemorates 35 years, stakeholders reaffirmed the importance of preserving the LGA’s history while building a future anchored on unity, vision, responsible leadership and collective action.
