Barr. Venatius Ikem has resigned as Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River State with immediate effect, citing a crisis of direction and lack of leadership cohesion within the party.
Ikem announced his resignation in a letter addressed to the PDP National Secretary and the State Secretary in Cross River State, expressing concerns over internal divisions and divergent positions that, according to him, have weakened the party’s ability to maintain a united political direction.
The former state chairman described his decision as difficult but necessary, noting that the prevailing internal dynamics had made it increasingly challenging for him to discharge his responsibilities effectively, particularly as the party approaches a critical electoral season.
He warned that the unresolved challenges could undermine the sacrifices, investments and aspirations of loyal party members if left unaddressed.
Ikem, who said he had served the party for five years, expressed gratitude to party leaders and supporters who stood by him throughout his tenure. He specifically acknowledged the support of Senator Sandy Onor, Senator Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe and PDP National Leader, Chief Nyesom Wike.
He also thanked his supporters across Cross River State, particularly the people of Obudu, his immediate constituency, for their loyalty and encouragement.
Despite his resignation, Ikem reaffirmed his commitment to the progress and development of Cross River State and Nigeria, while wishing the PDP success in its future endeavours.
His resignation comes at a critical period for the party as political activities and preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum.
The development raises fresh questions about the PDP’s leadership stability and political strategy in Cross River State ahead of the next electoral cycle.
