Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Edet Otu, has approved the return of the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) to the roads to carry out its statutory responsibilities, while clarifying that the Traffic Management and Regulatory Agency (TRAMRA) will focus exclusively on traffic management and control.
The decision, announced in a press release dated October 13, 2026, followed a meeting with key stakeholders in the transportation sector aimed at clarifying the responsibilities of both agencies and improving road safety across the state.
According to the statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary and Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Governor, Linus Obogo, the VIO will resume vehicle roadworthiness inspections, driver testing, accident investigations and vehicle documentation.
The agency will also conduct mechanical safety assessments, licensing-related tests and technical investigations in line with its statutory mandate.
TRAMRA, on the other hand, will concentrate on traffic management and control, including the enforcement of regulations against illegal parking, monitoring traffic flow, addressing traffic light violations and maintaining order on public roads.
The clarification is intended to eliminate overlapping functions between the two agencies and address concerns over alleged harassment and extortion of motorists.
Governor Otu, according to the statement, expects both departments to operate professionally and within their legally assigned responsibilities in the interest of motorists and residents of Cross River State.
The administration said the directive is designed to strengthen road safety, promote professionalism and ensure a more orderly transportation system across the state.
The move marks a clarification of the operational roles of VIO and TRAMRA, with both agencies expected to work within their respective mandates to improve traffic management and protect road users.
