The Governor of Cross River State, Senator Bassey Edet Otu, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Rt. Hon. Chris Agibe, describing him as a political icon and a pillar of strength in the Bakor Nation.
Represented by the Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem, the Governor’s heartfelt condolence message was delivered at the funeral ceremony held in Alok, Ikom Local Government Area.
Speaking on behalf of the Governor, Speaker Ayambem praised the late Agibe as a man of uncommon resilience, deep political wisdom, and a unifier whose legacy shaped many lives across political lines. He noted that Agibe played a pivotal role in his own political journey.
“Rt. Hon. Chris Agibe was not just a respected politician, he was a man of principle and courage. He was instrumental to my emergence as a member of the House, and I am personally pained by this loss. The Bakor Nation has lost one of its finest sons, and Cross River mourns with them,” Ayambem stated.
He urged the bereaved family to find strength in Agibe’s impactful life and enduring legacy. “Though the pain is great, may you be comforted in the knowledge that he lived a life of purpose. God alone gives and takes, and in His will, we find peace,” he added.
The funeral drew a large crowd of mourners from across political and social divides. Among the dignitaries in attendance were former Governors of Cross River State, H.E. Senator Liyel Imoke and H.E. Donald Duke, accompanied by his wife, Mrs. Onari Duke. Others present included Senator Gershom Bassey, Senator Eteng Jonah Williams, Hon. Victor Abang, Barr. Chris Agara, Architect Bassey Ndem, Ntufam Ekpo Okon, Hon. Mercy Nsor, and many others who came to pay their last respects.
