Governor of Cross River State, Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu, has reaffirmed the state’s commitment to sustainable development and climate action following high-level engagements with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, and the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, during the ongoing London Climate Action Week in the United Kingdom.
Governor Otu described the engagements as productive and significant, noting that they provided an opportunity to advance discussions on climate action, environmental sustainability, and strategic partnerships for sustainable growth.
The London Climate Action Week, regarded as one of the world’s largest independent climate events, brings together more than 75,000 participants from across the globe to explore practical solutions and accelerate action on climate change.
Cross River State is among the few subnational governments in Nigeria participating in this year’s conference, alongside Lagos State, underscoring the state’s growing role in global climate discourse.
According to Governor Otu, the state’s participation reflects its unwavering commitment to environmental conservation, climate resilience, and the pursuit of partnerships that will promote inclusive and sustainable development for the people of Cross River.
“As a state blessed with immense biodiversity and vast forest resources, Cross River remains resolute in championing climate-smart policies and initiatives that contribute to both national and global climate goals,” the Governor stated.
Cross River has long been recognised as a leading state in environmental conservation, particularly for its extensive tropical rainforest ecosystem, which plays a vital role in biodiversity preservation and climate regulation.
