As Nigeria commemorates its Democracy Day, Deputy Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Sylvester Agabi Jnr has called on citizens across the country to uphold the enduring values of justice, unity, and democratic responsibility.
In a statement released to mark the occasion, Hon. Agabi paid tribute to the heroes of Nigeria’s democratic journey and urged Nigerians to view democracy not just as a system of elections, but as a broader commitment to equity, inclusion, accountability, and service to the people.
“Today, we honour the courage of those who stood for justice, the sacrifices of heroes past, and the strength of the Nigerian people who continue to uphold the values of democracy,” Agabi stated. “Democracy gives every citizen a voice, and every community the right to dream of a better tomorrow.”
Reaffirming his role as a legislator and representative of the Obudu State Constituency, the Deputy Speaker pledged to continue serving with integrity, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to the needs of his constituents and the people of Cross River State.
“As your representative in the Cross River State House of Assembly, I reaffirm my commitment to democratic ideals — to legislate with integrity, to listen with compassion, and to act in the best interests of our people in Obudu and beyond,” he said.
Agabi emphasized the importance of national unity and collective responsibility in building a stronger and more prosperous Nigeria. He urged Nigerians to use the day as a moment of reflection and recommitment to peace and development.
“Let us use this day to recommit ourselves to peace, unity, and the shared task of building a stronger, more prosperous Nigeria,” he concluded.
The message ended with a patriotic salute:
“Long live Obudu!
Long live Cross River State!
Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria!”
