In a remarkable demonstration of compassion and advocacy for girls’ health and education, Mrs. Nelly Elverts Ayambem, wife of the Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, has reached over 2,000 schoolgirls through her “Pad a Girl Child” initiative.
The initiative, focused on promoting menstrual hygiene and supporting adolescent girls, distributed thousands of sanitary pads across selected secondary schools such as Holy Girl Secondary School, Ikom, Federal Government Girls College, Atimbo – Calabar, Abanyom Community Secondary School, Edor – Ikom, Community Secondary School, Nde – Ikom, Nnam Comprehensive Secondary School, Alok – Ikom.
According to Mrs. Ayambem, the programme is designed to improve menstrual hygiene, reduce absenteeism among female students during their periods, and eliminate the stigma surrounding menstruation.
“This is just the first batch. Many more schools will be captured in the next phase,” she stated, reaffirming her commitment to expanding the project to more communities across the state.
Parents, educators, and public health advocates commended the Pad a Girl Child campaign, describing it as a timely and impactful intervention that addresses a critical but often overlooked area in public policy.
