The Cross River State Commissioner for Science, Technology, and Innovation, Dr Justin Beshel, has tasked trainees in the ongoing 3-day capacity development programme, which is being organised by the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology in partnership with the State’s Ministry of Science and Technology, to actively participate in the training workshop and take advantage of the knowledge to reduce post-harvest losses in the state’s agricultural output.
At the flag-off of the training at Gomays Plaza, Calabar, Dr Beshel emphasized the need to apply science and technology to reduce post-harvest losses on agricultural produce. This, he said, would increase output, storage, and supply for consumption. He also bemoaned the high rate of food scarcity and losses in Nigeria because of the non-application of science, technology, and innovation.
According to Dr Beshel, the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science, and Technology has determined that it is prudent to supply the required tools to enhance the agricultural industry, specifically preventing farmers’ losses following cultivation. “The aim is to provide the trainees with the necessary skills to apply science and technology in agriculture, which will increase food production and reduce losses. By doing so, the state’s agricultural sector will be strengthened, and food security will be achieved.”
Beshel expressed gratitude to Governor Bassey Otu for fostering an atmosphere that supports the state’s advancements in science and technology.
Representatives from the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science, and Technology, including the Director of Legal Services, Bar. Tanko Ashang, and the Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Esuabana Nko Asanye (represented by the Director of Bioresources Technology), were present at the training. They admonished the trainees to maximize the three-day programme to promote agricultural development in the nation.
